The launch ceremony of Global Handwashing Day took place in Burera District, located in the Northern Province of Rwanda. Previously, the area suffered from recurring poor hygiene related diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. The campaign focused on making school children the main agents of change.
Also, a town hall meeting led by Ministry of Health, Education, Infrastructure, Commerce and the Local Government was broadcast live on National TV and Radio on October 11th 2008. This three hour live program attracted the larger publics, who phoned in and contributed with ideas and questions. Directors from the ministries and other key partners participated in the conference hall to provide answers. The event was covered by the national media.
